BOILER WATER TREATMENT SOLUTIONS
The source of water used for boilers can be local water, groundwater (drilled wells) or rivers and lakes. Some people mistakenly believe that using clean water for boilers is satisfactory; but that is not the case, the requirement for boiler water treatment is not to keep the water clear, clean and free of impurities, but how to prevent the furnace from forming scale to protect the boiler from damage and prolong the life of the furnace.
The white and thick layer of sediment is due to the dissolved impurities in the water, especially calcium and magnesium salts. During the operation of the boiler, CaCO3 and MgCO3 will be formed in the form of slurry or crystalline scale that adheres to the pipe wall of the boiler.
In fact in the boiler tube no white is seen, but instead a reddish-brown color, which is why the stronger red-brown color overwhelms the white. The reddish brown color is due to corroded furnace wall. Walls of pipes made of iron (Fe), in an environment where acids, oxygen, water and temperature are available; The iron is peeled off by the reaction and precipitates into a reddish-brown scale (rust).
As for the boiler tubes, vibration and shock are caused by atmospheric components mixed in the water being brought into the boiler. This gas is mainly oxygen and a part of carbon dioxide, in addition to damaging the tube (above) it also mixes with the steam causing the phenomenon of water damage, consequences: scratches, defects, edema of furnace pipes.
1. Consequences of using untreated water:
When using untreated or unsatisfactory water for boilers, the following consequences often occur:
Quick failure of boiler tubes (important for water tube boilers): boiler tubes are quickly damaged due to 3 reasons:
Scale in the pipe wall: due to the hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+) of the water is too high.
Due to corroded pipes.
Because the concentration of O2 and CO2 in the water exceeds the allowable level, it causes scratches and edema of the furnace tube.
Combining all three causes above, causing tube blockage, tube breakage, tube deformation, . . .
Because scale has a very small heat transfer coefficient, in other words, the heat transfer efficiency is very poor, wasting fuel in vain. This loss is much larger than the furnace tube failure.
2. Objectives of water treatment:
Water treatment is intended to preserve boiler life, mainly furnace tubes, and reduce fuel burn.
Protect the life of the furnace.
Do not build scale: Of course, you must regularly flush the bottom (2 - 3 times / day). The scale layer on the furnace wall should not exceed 1 mm.
Blowout water is not reddish brown (oven tube is not worn)
The deaerator is properly designed and used efficiently (for boilers with a capacity of 5 tons steam/hour or more).
Reduce fuel burn.
